Why was this blog created?

This blog was established in the days after the Haiti earthquake, and will likely focus on this disaster for the near future, but I would like this to be a repository for all manner of information on disasters, hazards, risk, and related matters. The amount of information here will ebb and flow with the salience of disasters and policy and research agendas. If you would like to be a contributing author, let me know!

The Moral Ambiguity of Looting - NYTimes.com

The Moral Ambiguity of Looting - NYTimes.com

A story that starts promisingly, but comes up far short of its potential. The litany of looting incidents "Chicagoans looted..., New Yorkers looted...." suggests that looting was common and widespread, neither of which was true. And, like most articles about looting, this article contradicts itself, which adds another reason to just not call it looting--no one knows what looting really is.

In Hawaii, Calm Prevailed Despite Tsunami Warning - NYTimes.com

This seemed like a non-news story at first (look, no panic!) but the article does a reasonably good job of explaining Hawaii's preparedness for tsunamis.
